Shihuishi
Art Direction, Creative Production, Identity

Hotel Sorrento’s newest culinary venture. Shihuishi, loosely translating to limestone in Cantonese, pays homage to the mineral’s long lasting history in Sorrento, as well as referencing the very walls of the venue. The identity is tethered to the past, drawing upon the rich history of Chinese photography and film as inspiration.

This is explored through the reinterpretation of works by cult heroes Wong Kar Wai and Fan Ho. Both artists play with spaces, shadows and depth to create intrigue and mystery – something the dimly lit basement of Shihuishi also possesses. These common threads can be seen throughout the venue, from the 3 handmade woodworks utilising patterns found in Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’, to the colour of the plates, to a large mural collaging Fan Ho’s shadow play.
